The lights came on in the very quiet theater. People shifted in their seats, many dabbed their eyes, and all looked straight ahead, still struggling to process the final images they had seen.

The Texas premiere of “Telling Amy’s Story” marked the beginning of Domestic Violence Awareness Month with a resounding call to action for advocates, officials and community members. The film chronicled the timeline of domestic violence experienced by Amy Homan McGee, a mother of two, who was shot and killed by her husband in 2001. TCFV had the privilege of screening the PBS-filmed documentary with the Texas First Lady Anita Perry, Verizon’s  David Russell, Detective Deirdri Fishel, and El Paso District Attorney Jaime Esparza present.  After the screening, the panel of guests discussed necessary advocacy efforts by the factions of the community they represented – law enforcement, the judiciary, and the business community.

We applaud the Verizon Foundation and Penn State Public Broadcasting for collaborating on this documentary and engaging communities.

PBS will be airing the documentary throughout the month of October. In an effort to Go Purple and celebrate DVAM, please view your local TV listing here to see when the film will run in your area.
