Austin Theater to Screen Celebrated DV Documentary
“Crime After Crime,” an official Selection of the Sundance Film Festival, will open at Austin’s Violet Crown Cinema on Friday, September 16th and last through Thursday, September 22nd. The film tells the story of two pro bono attorneys who wage an epic legal battle to free Deborah Peagler from prison 20 years after she was sentenced for the murder of the man who abused her. “Crime After Crime” is one of eight films in Oprah Winfrey’s OWN Documentary Club. Gov. Perry Signs New Human Trafficking Law
Gov. Rick Perry today ceremonially signed two bills creating stiffer penalties for individuals who commit human trafficking in Texas, House Bill 3000 and Senate Bill 24. The governor was joined by Rep. Senfronia Thompson, Sen. Leticia Van de Putte and Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott for the signing ceremony. TCFV is excited to announce the return of our signature prevention-focused event, Make It Real. The theme of this year’s conference will be Building a Community Through Reflection. Because prevention work is among the newer initiatives of many domestic violence programs, there are still a lot of questions waiting to be answered. Purple Postcard Press Conference
For the consecutive fourth legislative session, the Texas Council on Family Violence (TCFV) has joined with legislators, law enforcement, judges, family violence service advocates, domestic violence survivors and other Texans to send a message of support for full funding for family violence services. Family violence advocates gathered on March 14, 2011, to deliver purple postcards to the 82nd Texas Legislature. Dallas Cowboy Jason Witten Teams up with Texas Council on Family Violence and Tarrant County High Schools to Prevent Family Violence
The Texas Council on Family Violence (TCFV) has partnered with Dallas Cowboys Football Star Jason Witten’s SCORE Foundation and SafeHaven of Tarrant County for the family violence prevention program “Coaching Boys into Men.” Prevention specialists at TCFV and SafeHaven are training coaches from the Arlington and Birdville Independent School Districts so that they can teach young athletes about healthy and respectful relationships.
