Innovative New Economic Support Program is Launched
TCFV President Gloria Terry recently visited El Paso to launch an innovative new program in support of domestic violence victims working toward long-term economic stability. The city is one of the first in the nation to partner shelters and workforce solutions to assist victims with job skills and Individual Development Accounts for economic security. With funding from the Allstate Foundation and donated dollars, the impossible choice between an abusive relationship and homelessness has been erased for some Texans. Limited English Proficiency Access in Texas: Dialogue, Information and Innovation
On August 24, legal advocates from around the state attended the TCFV-hosted conference, LEP Access in Texas: Dialogue, Information and Innovation. This training continues the efforts of ensuring that survivors of family violence with limited English proficiency in Texas are effectively served in family violence programs and courts. In a TCFV survey conducted in 2009, 98% of legal advocates in family violence programs reported that they have experienced survivors coming to their doors with limited English proficiency. 71% of these legal advocates said that victims with LEP had negative outcomes in their legal cases due to the fact that they were ... Telling Amy’s Story
The lights came on in the very quiet theater. People shifted in their seats, many dabbed their eyes, and all looked straight ahead, still struggling to process the final images they had seen. The Texas premiere of "Telling Amy’s Story" marked the beginning of Domestic Violence Awareness Month with a resounding call to action for advocates, officials and community members. The film chronicled the timeline of domestic violence experienced by Amy Homan McGee, a mother of two, who was shot and killed by her husband in 2001. Dallas, Houston Screenings of Telling Amy’s Story
We enjoyed sharing the powerful documentary Telling Amy’s Story with advocates, community leaders and business allies in both Dallas and Houston. Both screenings were successful as they generated more engaged conversations about a coordinated community response. On November 30, Telling Amy’s Story was screened at the Verizon Headquarters in Las Colinas. Many Verizon employees were in attendance, which highlighted the company’s strong commitment to ending domestic violence and spreading awareness around the issue.
