TCFV Statewide Survey

The “Break the Silence. Make the Call” bilingual (English and Spanish) campaign was launched in October of 2000 at the Texas State Capitol. The campaign was designed to inform victims that they are not alone and resources and help are available. The National Domestic Violence Hotline (NDVH) number, 800-799-SAFE (7233) / 800-787-3224 (TTY), is included on all campaign materials. When victims call NDVH, advocates can connect them to resources in their area.

Through the support of the Texas Attorney General’s office and many others, the campaign has been able to change and save many lives. English language calls from Texas to the Hotline increased 69%, and there was a staggering 93% increase in Spanish language calls from Texas in the campaign’s inaugural month.

Prior to launching the campaign, TCFV conducted a statewide telephone survey to evaluate the prevalence and perceptions of domestic violence in Texas. The polling results showed that a shocking 75% of all Texans know someone who has been affected by domestic violence. In order to gain a deeper understanding of the unique barriers facing certain Texans, the survey included an over-sampling of the Texas Hispanic community. To create effective campaign messages, six focus groups were conducted in English and Spanish with survivors of domestic violence.
