Victim in Polygamist Compound Reaches out to Local Shelter for Assistance

A 16 year old girl living inside a polygamist compound in Eldorado reached out for help by calling a local family shelter in West Texas. The call was instrumental in the discovery of serious allegations of the physical and sexual abuse of children. “Calling the local shelter was an extremely courageous move on the young girl’s part” stated Sheryl Cates, CEO, National Domestic Violence Hotline (NDVH) and the Texas Council on Family Violence (TCFV). Cates urged all victims of domestic and sexual abuse to contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline for help. “Domestic abuse”, said Cates, “is intolerable, unacceptable and should be viewed by all as an assault on the very fabric of our families.” Continue Reading »

Full-Time Counselor

The Family Abuse Center is seeking a full-time, licensed professional to provide individual and group counseling for primary and secondary victims of domestic violence. Key responsibilities include providing counseling (approximate caseload of 20-30 clients), advocacy, intensive case management, domestic violence education, information and referrals. In addition, this individual will be expected to create and implement a non-residential support group program. Other responsibilities include staff support to the crisis line and shelter services when needed. Successful applicants will have a passion for helping women and children in crisis, experience and knowledge concerning the effects of domestic violence, and group facilitation experience. The applicant should possess a LMSW, LCSW or LPC. Bi-lingual preferred. Salary range is 29-34K, depending on experience. Hours are flexible.
