Foundations of Change: A Statewide Summit to Create Strategies for the Future

For more than 30 years, advocates and programs all over the world have been working to eliminate family violence. Great strides have been made since the Texas Council on Family Violence (TCFV) was founded in 1978. Service providers have helped countless women find safety, laws have been created that undoubtedly saved lives, and advocates continue to tirelessly support prevention efforts across the state.

Family violence is recognized as an important societal issue. Despite the movement’s many great advancements, there is still much work to be done before domestic violence is eliminated from our society. One of TCFV’s most significant goals is to “create opportunities for freedom from domestic violence.” In keeping with that mission and the ultimate objective of seeing an end to family violence, TCFV is hosting the Foundations of Change Summit on September 23 and 24, 2008, in Dallas, in conjunction with its annual conference.

The Texas Council on Family Violence (TCFV) will be hosting the 2008 New Workers’ Institute in Austin, Texas, on June 12-13, 2008. Conference registration fee for this event is $130 per person. The Institute will be held at the Omni South Park Hotel in Austin and hotel reservations can be made by calling 512.383.2621 or 1.800-843.6664. You may also make your reservation on line at: www.omniaustinsouthpark.com . In order to receive the TCFV special group rate of $85 (single) or $115 (double), you must make your reservation before May 27, 2008.

This two day interactive meeting has as one of its goals to encourage and support the valuable work of new domestic violence advocates. Join advocates from across Texas for this inspirational opportunity to network with domestic violence colleagues, obtain beneficial information on the seriousness of domestic violence in our state and explore new strategies in creating and supporting violence free families. Institute attendees will also be afforded the opportunity to gain useful knowledge on the foundation, philosophy, and origins of the effort to end intimate partner violence.

Relief Hotline Advocates Needed

The National Domestic Violence Hotline is accepting applications for Relief Hotline Advocates to work on an as-needed basis.

Job Summary:  Answer calls on NDVH; make appropriate referrals and provide information and crisis intervention.  Offer advocacy as needed to callers and follow up on calls for evaluation. 

Experience Required:  Basic literacy; one year experience in direct services to victims of domestic violence or similar human services programs; six months experience in crisis intervention.  Individual shall be able to type a minimum of 35 words per minute.  Experience/familiarity with computers with knowledge of Word for Windows and Access preferred.
