Dealing With Domestic Violence

EL PASO, Texas - You heard about the terrifying circumstances Jeneesa Lewis lived through while she was missing. But she also recounted several stories of abuse before her alleged kidnapping. Domestic violence has and continues to be a huge problem for our community.  Officials say unfortunately, there is no logical order to how or when an abuser is going to strike.

“We would see the bruises and we would say you need to get away from him.”  Jeneesa Lewis’s mother describes what her daughter went through after years of being involved in an abusive relationship with her husband and finally trying to end it.

Police: Missing Fort Bliss Soldier Stabbed, Raped by Husband

EL PASO, Texas (AP) - El Paso police say a Fort Bliss soldier was kicked in the face, stabbed and raped — allegedly by her spouse — before she was abducted from her off-post apartment.

Authorities say the 29-year-old soldier was then driven to Nevada by her estranged husband.  An affidavit says the soldier was attacked as she walked into her apartment late Thursday.  Relatives say the soldier had planned to leave her husband.

As Wars Lengthen, Toll on Military Families Mounts

FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. (AP) - Far from the combat zones, the strains and separations of no-end-in-sight wars are taking an ever-growing toll on military families despite the armed services’ earnest efforts to help.

Divorce lawyers see it in the breakup of youthful marriages as long, multiple deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan fuel alienation and mistrust. Domestic violence experts see it in the scuffles that often precede a soldier’s departure or sour a briefly joyous homecoming.

Teresa Moss, a counselor at Fort Campbell’s Lincoln Elementary School, hears it in the voices of deployed soldiers’ children as they meet in groups to share accounts of nightmares, bedwetting and heartache.

A Wake Up Call

GUEST OPINION

Published: Sunday, July 20, 2008 1:05 AM CDT

Earlier this year, the West Virginia Domestic Violence Fatality Review Team released its first report on domestic violence deaths in the state as well as recommendations and some other statistics regarding this sad subject.

The statistical year the team looked at was 2003. That year, the team investigated 39 domestic violence related deaths. Of those, 26 were homicides and 13 were suicides. These deaths included both intimate partner incidents wherein the spouse, ex-spouse, etc. is the perpetrator and victim, which is by far the norm, as well as fatal family violence wherein the perpetrator and the victim are family members, such as siblings or parents and children, but they obviously are not intimate.
