LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) — At 7-foot-1 and more than 300 pounds, Shaquille O’Neal doesn’t look like the type of person who would be easily intimidated.

NBA star Shaquille O’Neal praises Karen Earl for her efforts on behalf of domestic abuse victims.

But volunteering with local law enforcement, the NBA star has learned from his peers that domestic violence calls are among the most dangerous for police officers.

“[It's] a very disturbing thing,” said O’Neal, who himself has dealt mainly with children’s cases.

“I don’t really think a lot of women know what to do,” he said.

That’s where Karen Earl comes in.

As executive director of the Jenesse Center, the oldest domestic violence intervention program in south central Los Angeles, California, Earl is a “tireless and fearless” champion of women and children living in abusive situations, O’Neal says.

Tough Economic Times Spur Increasing Domestic Abuse

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

By Sally Kalson, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Money problems are always a risk factor in relationships. With record job losses, home foreclosures and the collapse of the financial markets, more people are looking at unemployment and insecurity than at any time in recent memory. That translates into more tension at the much-vaunted “kitchen table” that politicians like to invoke.
As a result, organizations that deal with domestic violence and substance abuse are bracing for more demand for their services — even as the recession is forcing some to cut budgets and lay off their own personnel.

The National Domestic Abuse Hotline, headquartered in Austin, Texas, could be the canary in the coal mine. The hot line documented a whopping 21 percent increase in calls for September over the same month in 2007, said spokeswoman Retha Fielding.

Supreme Court to Hear Arguments in Case That Could Re-Arm Thousands of Convicted Domestic Violence Abusers

Monday, November 10th, 2008
WASHINGTON, Nov 10, 2008 /PRNewswire-USNewswire via COMTEX/ — The U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments today at 11 a.m. in United States v. Hayes, a case that will determine whether thousands of convicted domestic violence abusers will be allowed to possess guns.
The Court will interpret the federal Lautenberg Amendment, which bans gun possession by convicted domestic violence abusers. The Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence and law enforcement groups filed a brief in June urging the Court to reverse an appeals court ruling that, if allowed to stand, could re-arm convicted abusers in a majority of states.
