While the holiday season is supposed to bring out the best in people, it often brings out the worst in abusive relationships.

The stress of the holidays can worsen an already unhealthy domestic situation.

Law enforcement and social workers attest to an increase in domestic violence. But officials say the season also offers an opportunity for victims to escape the cycle of abuse.

Lt. Renee Smith, a Ouachita Parish sheriff’s deputy who handles domestic violence cases, said the case load picks up around Thanksgiving and stays at a high level through New Year’s Day.

“Historically, it’s because people are under more stress from spending money, buying all the presents and having the families in close quarters,” Smith said. “Then alcohol plays into it because it perpetuates and aggravates the situation.
